4th Battery RFA

Hello All,

I am searching for info on the batteries etc a chap, Arthur William Ellis 212251, served with.

He joined the R.F.A in early December 1915. His records are available online, I can see he was in reserve until early February 1917 where he was posted to 57 Reserve Battery (3 "A" Reserve Brigade) and then 4 "B" Reserve Brigade within a few days. In mid July he was posted to 1 "C" Reserve Brigade (23rd Battery and 37th Battery) and then sent to India in October of 1917.

In May of 1918 he is returned to the BEF from 4th Battery RFA before then finally being posted to 126 (A) Brigade 2/1 Warwickshire Battery on 16th August 1918 and then seeing out the war with these.

I can find some info online about most of the above mentioned Brigades and Batteries but can find nothing at all about the activities of the 4th Battery out in India, if anyone can shed some light on what they would have doing or based etc. it would be much appreciated. Or if anyone has any further info on the other Brigades also that would be ace.

Cheers

Dan

4 Battery RFA was part of VII Brigade RFA, and was based at Rawalpindi throughout the war, under 2nd (Rawalpindi) Divsion. The brigade was transferred to Nowshera, under 1st (Peshawar) Division, in November 1918.

There are very few War Diaries for units which served at home, but there are diaries for VII Brigade and 4 Battery for May to August 1919 at the National Archives at Kew in file WO95/5405. They have not been digitised yet so a personal visit may be necessary.

Hi Ron,

Thanks for this.

I'm assuming it was mainly garrison duty out there?

I am not near to the NA for an easy visit, the details though will give me something to be searching for online for now.

Cheers

Yes, mainly garrison duty, but the North-West Frontier was a fairly active area.

You might also look at the "India and Asia Pacific" subforum to see if anyone else has been looking at activities in the area.

Lovely Ron, thanks for the suggestion. I'll have a read and see what I can find.
