The BBC ran an article on Thomas and Eliza Everton who had 8 sons in the war https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-birmingham-46044001

I have just read this snippet regarding former Guardsman Henry Ellison who also had 8 sons engaged in the war, I assume it is true ?

Tricky one this...I can find a John Ellison b 1836 in Wigan, in the 1911 census he is an Army pensioner, living in Knowsley Road, Battersea...Chelsea records show a John Ellison, Grenadier Guards, can't get further as it's subscription to Fold3.

Quite a number of Wigan area Ellisons were casualties in WW1.

Somewhere I’m sure I have an image of the 8 Ellison brothers, I’m also sure I have an image of the 10 Caplin brothers from York.

The Electoral Roll for Knowsley Rd has a procession of Ellisons at No. 78 starting with John in the 1890's followed by Percy and Fred.

1901 Census has sons James F, Percy, Victor and Fred.

Another paper on BNA reports the brothers are from Cottenham, Cambridge and

one son is on a warship and another is returning with the Canadian E.F ( need subscription to read all of it)

Hi David, I've read the same article but I'm coming to the conclusion that the brothers from Cottenham are not Ellison's...just an unnamed family...there are no Ellisons in Cottenham in the 1911 census.

It also seems Henry Ellison might be an error, and that it should be John Ellison.

The John Ellison of Knowsley Road, Battersea in 1911, seems to fit the bill, he was married twice and had 11 sons that I can find so far.

In the 1871 census he is a private in the Grenadier Guards, with sons William aged 15, and Edward John aged 8.George aged 5, Thomas aged 2.

In 1881 added to the list is Albert aged 11, James aged 9, Henry aged 6, Robert aged 2, and Percy aged 1.

In 1891 he has added Victor aged 6, and Frederick aged 4.

I haven't had time to look for surviving military records for them all but

Percy was killed in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers in 1917 and Victor was in the RMLI and went down with Kitchener on HMS Hampshire.

What do you think?

I was hoping Jay from post #3 could find his photo of the 8 brothers.

Perhaps he was a John Henry but it looks like the correct family.

Apologies I am mistaken, the image I have is of the 8 Lord brothers from High Wycombe. The Ellison brothers rang a bell but this was a forum thread several years ago regarding 2 Elson brothers

Cottenham and Histon are villages north of Cambridge and quite close to each other. Chivers Farms produced a large proportion of the plum and apple jam supplied to the British Army during the Great War.

Incidentally there is a long-established firm of Cambridge solicitors called Barr Ellison, so there may have been some Ellisons in and around Cambridge a century ago.

There are Ellison's in Cambridgeshire, but I can't find any in Histon or Cottenham...there is a Rector W Ellison in Halton who had four Officer sons in the war, but I don't think there's a connection with the Battersea ones.
