OK, there is nothing in English that I know off regarding the S.98/05-17 and the S.84/98-17 - yes, both types were made.

 

The standard (?only) work on these I know of is what is in S.Thiem, Deutsche Versuchs- und Musterseitengewehre von 1895 bis 1945 (2014), which reads like a Habilitationsschrift, i.e., am elaborated Ph.D thesis..

 

Thiem's book has some 50 pages on these, which is a bit too much for me to handle right now, but he does say that 5,050 Versuchsgewehre 98/17 were made (all by Simson), and so one assumes the same number of bayonets (he does not, as far as I can see) provide a list of makers. Of the rifles, 4,000 were distributed to front-line troops, 1000 to Rekruten-depot, the rest to the rifle proofing section of the Prussian War ministry. Some of these (all?) bayonets were adaptations of exitsting ones, with the mortise slot partly filled.

 

Even more interestingly, though, the fitting system of these bayonets was based on a 1895 Waffenfabrik patent using a nose-cap attachment system for the bayonet which was adapted to form the S.98 fitting system, but which evidently inspired the development of the nose-cap and boss bayonet attachment system used with the P.1907 (SMLE) rifle as patented in Great Britain 11th July and confirmed on 19th August 1901!

 

As for rarity, well, there were possibly 5.050 made, and so I wonder how that number compares with certain of the Erstaz bayonets, e.g., the EB 55.

A further note on the bayonet might be appropriate here. It uses the original Mauser patent system as developed for fitting to the Trials Gew.88/95 to avoid barrel vibration with a fixed bayonet affecting accuracy. This trials rifle became the Gew.98, which used a different bayonet fitting altogether. There are some btrass-hilted S.71 around converted to the Trials Gew.fitting 88/95 - these being the S.71/95. Quite why the same fitting was re-introduced in 1917 to become the S.98/05-17 and S.84/98-17 is, as yet, unlear to me.
