T8HANTS Posted 19 July , 2019 Share Posted 19 July , 2019 I found this allied propaganda leaflet to the Germans whilst having a tidy of old papers, it says in pencil on the back. "Dropped by one of our aeroplanes 16/9/18 near Dr?noutre" Thought it might be of interest.....G
ICM - RAF Retd Posted 19 July , 2019 Share Posted 19 July , 2019 A foretaste of the 'Nickels' dropped by the ton in WW2.
Pat Atkins Posted 19 July , 2019 Share Posted 19 July , 2019 Indeed, although it seems very information-heavy than the occasional example of a Nickel I've seen (an uncle scattered tens of thousands of the things all over the Balkans 1944-45, hence my passing interest); perhaps reflects a different age. Anyway, an interesting post, thanks! I wasn't even aware that psyops existed in this aerial form in WW1. Pat
T8HANTS Posted 19 July , 2019 Author Share Posted 19 July , 2019 I had to look up the term 'nickel', not one I had heard before.
Pat Atkins Posted 19 July , 2019 Share Posted 19 July , 2019 Just before we incur the (righteous) wrath of the mods for having strayed, I believe the origin lies in the codename Operation NICKEL for the commencement of leafletting Germany by the RAF 1939/40. Was universally used as a noun and gerund (e.g. "nickelling") in RAF daily squadron operational records, certainly by my uncle's time with 148 (SD) Sqdn at Brindisi from Sept 1944. Cheers, Pat
