Dear Fellow Great War Forum Members,

A Goodie is offered for an Image of Ernest Mathews, please...

Lieut. E. Mathews, IARO, oriiginally enlisted in the Royal Engineers in 1908.

He may well have become a Foreman of Works (normally an NCO rank), before crossing to France as a Sapper with the BEF on 5 October 1914. 19071 Spr E. Mathews was with 54th Field Company, RE. (7th Division: Ypres, 19 October to 22 November 14; Langemarck, 21 to 24 October 1914; Gheluvelt, 29 to 31 October 1914.).

A Lieut E. Mathews, RE, is shown in Chapter XII (Last Days At Helles) of Vol. VI "History of the Corps of Royal Engineers", in a MiD-like pier-strengthening action ('alone amongst the staff, he had considerable experience in coastal work').

Be that as it may, Ernest Matthews was commissioned into the Indian Army Reserve of Officers on 7 November 1918, attached 1st Bengal Sappers and Miners (for Third Afghan). Educated: England. Languages: Hindustani. Previous Service: RE, 1908-18; BEF, France, 1914-15.53391803_ErnestMathewsIAROlateSpr54FdCoyREBid240PoundsDNWJul2019.jpg.41e4bf62ccc8baab25374b11cee39a6b.jpg107619455_ErnestMathews.jpg.5d508f924b051d7875e0aa0361bb5df2.jpg1328134520_ErnestMathewsNov1919LieutIARO.jpg.46e5a07971a29f105340497ff3ca754d.jpg1042199867_ErnestMathews3.jpg.fcb18241fe7709e0166b65febaf33aa2.jpg

Kindest regards,

Kim.
