Remembered Today:

Private Walter Lee, Northampton and Manchester Regiments

John French

Recommended Posts

Albert Walter Lee, born 2nd quarter 1898, first joined the Northampton Regiment as Private 46096 and later was transferred to the 20th Battalion Manchester Regiment and renumbered 54139.  He died on 4/10/18 in France and was given a war gratuity of £6-10s.

Please could you provide an estimated date of enlistment and any other information relating to his change of regiment (after wounds?).  I would also appreciate a link to 20th Manchester war diaries for Oct 1918.

Thanks

John

There are two records for men with nearby numbers that suggest a pattern (two swallows do not yet make a summer of course):

39748 Northamptonshire Regiment, 54194 Frederick John Slade

03-05-1917 - Serving as a baker in the Army Service Corps in the UK

04-05-1917 - Posted to 103rd Training Reserve Battalion, No. 58527

05-08-1917 - 4th (Reserve) Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment, renumber 39748

17-10-1917 - To Boulogne via Folkestone

18-10-1917 - Joined 17th Infantry Base Depot

21-10-1917 - Transferred to the Manchester Regiment under Army Order 204 of 1916, renumbered 54194, and posted to 20th Battalion Manchester Regiment

30-10-1917 - Joined 20th Battalion Manchester Regiment

39912 Northamptonshire Regiment, 54160 Edward Robinson Bowness

03-05-1917 - Serving as a baker in the Army Service Corps in the UK

04-05-1917 - Posted to 103rd Training Reserve Battalion, No. 58469

05-08-1917 - Transferred to 4th (Reserve) Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment, renumber 39912

17-10-1917 - To Boulogne via Folkestone

18-10-1917 - Joined 17th Infantry Base Depot

21-10-1917 - Transferred to the Manchester Regiment under Army Order 204 of 1916, renumbered 54160, and posted to 20th Battalion Manchester Regiment

30-10-1917 - Joined 20th Battalion Manchester Regiment

The 20th Manchesters departed for Italy very soon after these soldiers would have joined.

The main discrepancy that is not explained with these men is the 46096 number in the Northamptonshire Regiment. That dates to early April 1917 (despite being considerably higher than the 39XXX numbers above), so he may have gone straight to the 4th (Reserve) Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment without serving with 103rd TRB.

Mark/Steve, thanks for your information.

Mark, please could you also give me a link to the 20th Manchesters with the 7th Division in Italy.
