Hi Guys,

Is it possible to tell anything from the army number issued to a man transferred into the 171 Coy RE from the infantry?  No 620 Pte. Owen McCallum 1st Bn A&SH, became No86384 171 Coy RE. Sometime later he went beck to the 2nd Bn A&SH.

The original numbers for 171 Tunn Coy are in the range 66900 to 66950.The next block appear to be 82100 to 82998,the 3rd 83683 to  86948 (based on my database of observed and recorded numbers to the RE) He arrived at the company at a busy time .The company was serving at Hill 60 and the Bluff.under Major D Griffith. They blew mines on 17th and 19th April. In July 1915 they were at Ploegsteert and St Yves.In April 1916 they took over at Spanbroekmolen.

*note significant numbers in the 86100 to 86999 are shared with 170 ,172 ,173 and 174 Tunn Coys.

The company was formed with the First 5 Coys in Feb 1915.The originals of 171 coy were recruited from the R Monmouth Siege coys  and 38 specially enlisted miners who joined on 9th April 1915.best w, Howard
