Not always possible with M.M.’s I’m afraid, but you never know..at least you have a time frame to work with so possible the war diaries may hold something.

Best of luck,

Dave.

I’ve noticed this thread is in the medals section, might be worth posting another or moving this to the “soldiers and their units” section as this may attract more excellent researchers that enjoy a challenge.

Both these men where Military Medal winners from my small village in Ireland. I would love to know more about how they won these. Can anybody shed any light on this?

Many thanks,

Gerard

Lawler's London Gazette entry here:

https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/31338/supplement/6043

He was 2nd Battalion RMF.  The battalion war diaries that may give a clue as to the reason for the award.  .https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/results/r?_srt=3&_aq=2+Battalion+munster+fusiliers&_nq1=86&_nq2=8&_cr=wo+95&_dss=range&_ro=any&_p=1900&_st=adv

The date of the LG publication suggests an award related to the March 1918 onwards time frame.

Do you have a subscription or access otherwise to Ancestry where the war diaries can been seen easily?

Nolan's LG entry says he was 1st Battalion.  Again, as with Lawler, the late publication suggests an award for the March 1918 onwards period.  War diaries may hold a clue.  Those for 1916 onwards are here:

https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/results/r?_aq=(1 AND royal AND munster AND fusiliers) AND "diaries"&_nq1=2&_nq2=6&_dss=range&_ro=any&_p=1900|1925&_st=adv
