Connecticut Posted 10 July , 2019 Share Posted 10 July , 2019 This is said to be John James Sproule, 9th Battalion, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. Does the cap badge correspond to that? What is the white thing on the left shoulder?
FROGSMILE Posted 10 July , 2019 Share Posted 10 July , 2019 (edited) No the badge isn’t that of the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. It looks to me like Army Ordnance Corps (AOC), who were responsible for the storage, in depots of various sizes, of war materiel such as ammunition, rations, water, fuel and fodder for transport. The ‘white thing’ at his shoulder is a clasp knife lanyard, as was issue to all soldiers to secure the knife in the top pocket. Many men plaited the lanyard to shorten it and turn it into a form of decoration. The AOC were a service support corps and so non-combatant. In the years 1917-18 a shortage of infantrymen led to significant numbers of men of the right age and fitness being combed out from non-combatant corps and posted to Infantry regiments. Perhaps that is what happened in this case. The AOC was a part of the Army where a man with above the average numeracy and literacy might serve, as it predominantly involved the running of accounts and keeping tally of consumption and restocking. Connecticut Posted 10 July , 2019 Author Share Posted 10 July , 2019 Many thanks for your information. I have what I believe to be his pension record of being wounded. Should I continue discussion here or switch to individual soldiers forum?

You can continue here, but bear in mind that the experts in military documentation, and with access to genealogical research platforms, tend to linger principally in the soldiers forum. Dave1418 Posted 11 July , 2019 Share Posted 11 July , 2019 Hi the 03 leather belt is another inkling toward ASC and it does look like he's wearing spurs and the front leather section can be seen over the top of the boot.

It’s not ‘ASC’ that was referred to, Dave, but AOC. If you examine the badge you will see why that is thought the most likely.
