Remembered Today:

French Brothers - Nerson brothers of Valreas

Hoping that someone can help me with my quest to find out as much as I can about the two brothers whose details are attached.

The two brothers..... Rene and Fernand Nerson (one has his surname spelt incorrectly as far as I can gather - but happy to be proved wrong and establish that they are not brothers!) both attended the Ruskin School Home in Heacham, Norfolk prior to the Great War...... French boys from Valreas, in the region of the Vaucluse, were schooled hundreds of miles from home in rural Norfolk.  The school was a co-ed boarding school, a rarity in itself, run on socialist principles, and why the parents of the two boys sent them to Norfolk I have no idea (well no idea at the moment).

I would dearly love to establish as much as I can about the boys

I believe that they are on the Valreas war memorial

I am assuming that the following is correct:

Rene Solomon died on 28 August 1914... but the rest I am struggling with the translation.... can anyone help me please?  I am assuming that he is listed at Rancourt.

Fernand Samuel (presume two years younger than Rene) died on 4 April 1917 at Pontavert, Aisne.... likewise I am struggling with the translation.  I know that there is a large French Cemetery at Pontavert but not sure whether he is buried there.

Thank you in advance for any help anyone can give me.

Andrew

Dear Keith

Thank you for your help with this.  I have researched a large number of British and Commonwealth soldiers but never considered a French soldier before..... a mere beginner! so any help you have given me, or anyone else, would be very gratefully received.

Where do you find the Memoire des Hommes cards please?

I have looked at the site the link that you supplied, and that is very interesting.... thank you

It does seem that my original information was wrong and that they are not brothers..... for the records that Keith pointed me to shows that one is called René Salomon NERSUM.

Good to get things correct.

Hi Andrew,

The search engine results will contain both links to the matricule militaire pages, and where applicable, Memoire des Hommes cards for those who died.

Best wishes
Keith
