Mark1959 Posted 6 July , 2019 Share Posted 6 July , 2019 (edited) F+F. 31/7/15 qualifying date for 1914/15 Star. Class Z reserve 25/4/19. Rolls show 8 E Lancs and 8 KORL. LLT would suggest went with main body of 8 E Lancs to France. Scraps of papers survive. From Burnley (29 Boot St on enlistment). Enlisted 18/12/14. Born c 1892. Docs say to 8th KORL in 1918. There is ref to a hospital admission Orpington on what looks like a faded 18/10/17 that may explain the transfer. Also a faded form B103 that indicate wounded 9/10/17. Back to France 29/3/18. Transferred to 8 KORL 1/4/18. Wounded again 1 or 2/10/18 and back to UK certainly by 18/10/18 (he was on leave in UK mid-Sept 1918). Later wound was a GSW left thumb Wife Elizabeth nee Burrows. Address on demob 16 Norton St. Burnley Nothing on MM I can see Ancestry have him indexed with number 7770 Edited 6 July , 2019 by Mark1959

ATNOMIS Posted 7 July , 2019 Author Share Posted 7 July , 2019 (edited) Pals From a post on The British Medal Forum Burnley News - Saturday 16 June 1917 "BURNLEY WEAVER. Reported to have Won the Military Medal. Mrs. Sloan (sic), 16, Norton-street, Burnley, has heard that her husband has won the Military Medal for bravery in the field. Private Fredk. Sloan (sic), 17790, 8th East (stretcher bearer), enlisted two years and six months ago. He has seen some severe fighting, including the Battle of Arras. Prior to the war he was a weaver at Woodfield Mill, Trafalgar-street. He is 25 years of age. His brother, Sergt. James Sloan, has been in the Army 16 years, and another brother, Private Frank Sloan, is now in France." With photo of recipient. I would hazard a guess and suggest that he was awarded the MM for bravery as a stretcher bearer, rescuing wounded under fire.
