Looking to identify this soldier

I'm looking to identify this soldier, I'm not familiar with the cap badge or uniform.

I've tried to identify him through the death date against my family tree, but so far no luck.

Kind regards,

J West

Definitely a Lancer maybe 9th or 16th, but I cannot find any CWGC entries for Lancers and the given date, what are the family names you’re working on?

Yes, a cavalry regiment but which one.  Have you looked at the CWGC website for any clues

you know the date and he was rewarded for bravery in the field

That's interesting, in that case it's more likely to be either connected with surnames Binks, Grant, Pearce and / or Pulford...

I'm working on the surname Breame as well but I don't think this is a Breame family member.

I haven't no, will give that a look. Thanks for helping. It's one of those things I think many people will sympathise with, it's so important to write names on the backs of photos!!

Dorset Yeomanry?  If that's the case then a contender would be Robert Leslie Burnell DCM  - Killed in Action - 9/6/1918

Next of kin was his wife Louisa Kate Burnell according to Ancestry

There is no further Information on SDGW  for Binks other than he was born in Brentwood Essex...enlisted Carlisle ...resided in Ipswich

The cap badge and plastron tunic is 9th Lancers, as Michelle first said, presumably he completed a short engagement in the regular army with that regiment and was then with the TF Dorset Yeomanry subsequently.

Thanks for identifying it as 9th Lancers. Although we have a problem, the chap in my photo was killed in action 8th June, not 9th as mentioned here...

The plot thickens!

Thats true but if he was involved and killed in a skirmish on the 8th its possible that his death was not reported until the 9th and thus the 9th would be stated as official.

You need to take the date with a pinch of salt, as the old saying goes.

A soldier may have been killed on the 8th but sometimes the death was reported on the 9th.

Because the date reported, was sometimes accepted as the date of death.

Am I the only one who thinks that this fellow on the left looks very similar?

Didn’t see Skipman’s post earlier, nice find Mike.

Robert’s 3 digit service number (781) looks to have been issued sometime between 5th February 1914 (724) and the 7th August 1914 (800)

The picture is ostensibly for sale via pic-clic.

Sorry if I'm upsetting the apple cart but the man in the opening post is not 9th Lancers, he is 16th Lancers. The angle of the lance pennons is the clear giveaway.   Pete.
