Geo. R. Rose ??

Been looking at the Service Record of Royal Marine Bandsman 236 Henry LODGE.

I can see that he was mentioned in Despatches 15th. September 1916.

The record also says that he was "25th. October 1916, Commended re Services in Battle of Jutland, Geo. R. Rose".

It's the "Geo. R. Rose" that worries me. I can only think that he got a rosette rather than a spray of oak leaves to wear on his ribbon bar. I hope someone can confirm this or put me right!

Or was there an officer G.R. Rose?

"Geo." was a very common abbreviation for George. I'm sure that it is the name of an officer. Could it be a mis-transcription for Captain George Parish Ross, Captain of the battleship HMS Marlborough? That ship was one of the few capital ships (other than the battlecruisers) to be heavily involved in the battle.

Any chance of posting a copy of the service record in question?

Thank you all - Henry Lodge was on the Marlborough at Jutland, so I'm sure this was Captain George Parish Ross.

I should have had my second thought before committing my first thought to the web!! Thanks again,

Sometimes the pieces of a puzzle fall into place more quickly than others!
