Boyd Posted 21 June , 2019 Share Posted 21 June , 2019 (edited) Hello - I Do hope some one can assist me with this query - I am doing some research on a 416360 Pte. Francis Curran originally from Belfast who served with 5th Canadian Mounted Rifles and was killed in action on the 1/2 October 1916 at Battle of the Ancre Heights. I have attached a copy of what appears to be his medal card from the Canadian Library and archives. My question is this, why would he have been deemed as "Not Eligible" for a medal issue as annotated on the record below - any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated Thank you in anticipation. Andrew Upton Posted 21 June , 2019 Share Posted 21 June , 2019 Star refers to either the 1914 or 1914-15 Star. So he is not eligible if he only served overseas from 1916 or later. He is still eligible for the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
ss002d6252 Posted 21 June , 2019 Share Posted 21 June , 2019 His service record is available for free download - https://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/military-heritage/first-world-war/personnel-records/Pages/item.aspx?IdNumber=130134 Craig

Thank yio that would have been my understanding as he missed the 15 star dates how can I confirm if these were issued or not as it appears from the paper evidence they were not? Ahaaa I see what you are saying the shorthand is stating that he was in fact eligible for the other two medals that would make sense. Thank you so very much, a fresh pair of eyes never goes amiss - Is there any method or contact point where I could confirm if they where actually ever issued? If it was the same as the UK then they were issued automatically. Craig
tullybrone Posted 21 June , 2019 Share Posted 21 June , 2019 (edited) Hi, Proof of issue of the medals is the document at P19 of the service records. That document shows his service details plus details of his qualifying date for service in France and a reference to the Medal Rolls at the bottom of the page - believe it or not the hand written “squiggles” on the top right and left of the document indicates the medals were issued https://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/military-heritage/first-world-war/Pages/read-medal-card.aspx Steve Edited 21 June , 2019 by tullybrone
PaddyO Posted 21 June , 2019 Share Posted 21 June , 2019 Rather than his Medal Index Card is this in fact the index card for the Memorial Plaque and Scroll sent out to next of kin? Here it seems to record despatch dates for both to his sister in 1921.

As per the LAC link I attached to my last post the “squiggle” - officially called a check mark - indicates the Medal was sent out. Steve

Boyd Posted 22 June , 2019 Author Share Posted 22 June , 2019 Thanks guys I appreciate all the sound advice I guess the best bet is to get replica medals as he originals will be long gone by nor any recommendations for suppliers ? Boyd Posted 29 June , 2019 Author Share Posted 29 June , 2019 Just a little update for those interested I was actually ble to purchase a genuine set of matching medals on eBay for £40 that is cheaper that the current replicas that re on offer which wen you think of it is actually very sad. This set belonged to a 2919 Gnr A Seavers RA - I was also able to get a 5th C.M.R tu in button so I think I should be able to make a nice memorial framed set with these and a replica Death Penny and Scroll. Would have loved to geofence a cap-badge but they seem to be like hens teeth. Once again thank you for the assistance you have given me.
