corisande Posted 17 June , 2019 Share Posted 17 June , 2019 Transfer date 04 Sep 1916 Transferred to To 14 Amb Train It records that he had "Contus Thigh R" which I assume is Contusion to his right thigh" there is also a "W" As I said above, there is not a lot. It is a page with a couple of dozen soldiers, and not just him
MaxD Posted 17 June , 2019 Share Posted 17 June , 2019 The medical records which have been preserved and which are on FMP are a sample only of all those from the Great War. Explanation here: https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C10949 The reference in his records to 25 July 1916 appears not to be among those kept and seems not to have resulted in return to UK. The reference to 3 Sep 1916 is the admittance on 4 Sep 1916 (and subsequent evacuation to UK) that corisande notes. The reference to 14 Nov 1917 is not among the records but you have the newspaper and again he came home afterwards. (There is a further FMP reference to a medical record in 1919 but this belongs to an American by the same surname and initial). Max
Mark1959 Posted 17 June , 2019 Share Posted 17 June , 2019 (edited) There is a WFA Card for Blacka. Shows a discharge date of 16/12/19. It does not give the cause of discharge but did receive a pension for some kind of disability He was also on a War Office Wounded list published on 26/9/18. There is an article in the Todmorden District News 8/8/19 about local men being honoured. One is Blacka; he and another man were present and were "badly wounded in the legs and hobbled on crutches" An article in the same paper on 20/9/18 announces his MM and mention he had been wounded 3 times and "is now in hospital in Cheshire". Address given is same as on WFA card The medal roll indicates he served in several West Riding battalions not just 1/4th. His name appears on a list of MMs in the 2/4th War Diary. The list is headed "Honours and Awards for gallantry in operations on the Marne from 20th-29th July 1918". The list mistakenly gives his number as 202310. The 2/4th were in operations around Havrincourt in mid-Sept (10th-15th) 1918. 13 ORs killed an 135 wounded. This attack seems the most likely location and time for this latter wounding. MaxD Posted 17 June , 2019 Share Posted 17 June , 2019 His record shows he actually received his medal on 4 August 1919, the newspaper article that Mark1959 refers to is no doubt the report of the presentation that day. His record also has, related to the discharge details - GSW right foot, left leg, left hand and right shoulder. His MM record says he was with 2/4th West Riding Regiment when awarded. His record shows he joined 2/4th on 16 Jun 1918 so a look at the war diary may have some clue: https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C7355398 If you have Ancestry : https://www.ancestry.co.uk/interactive/60779/43112_3086_1-00000?backurl=&ssrc=&backlabel=Return Max

clk Posted 17 June , 2019 Share Posted 17 June , 2019 (edited) Hi DaveC. The medical record referred to above (posts #2 and #5) is in the ledger for 11 CCS (in Gezaincourt at that time). It indicates that he was admitted, and transferred to the ambulance train on the same day. As well as the dates in his service file, it looks like he was also wounded in August 1918 All images sourced from Findmypast 22218 Black has papers which show that he was wounded 25.8.1918. 235526 Blackburn was awarded the DCM for his actions on 26/27.8.1918 - the citations says that he was severely wounded in the head. 235586 Boagey was wounded 25.8.1918.
