Hi All

I am trying to find out information on my Grandads service 1914-19. He served in the Royal Field Artillery, but my dad reckons he was in the Royal Horse Artillery at one point.Would this have happened?

We have a Battery photo of him that has a board at the front titled "A 175 RFA",

but on his medal card, his unit is "155 B Battery RFA ". Tried searching the net but can't find a great deal of info, so I would be grateful if anyone could point me in the right direction.

He was Cpl Benjamin Fellows 33330

Many Thanks

David Fellows

Welcome David,

It is quite feasible that he transferred from the RHA to the RFA,& that during service in WW1 he changed Batteries[A/B] & Brigades[155/175],Have you checked out the "Long Trail" @ the head of this Site It may well help answer some of your initial Queries! Good Luck.

Thanks for the reply. Thought the numbers were battery numbers, not Brigade numbers! Thats one thing learnt already.

Hi,

Im in the process of researching my great grandfather who also served in the RFA. One thing I discovered was the information on the medal index card does not relate to his brigade, or his battery. The numbers refer to the medal index, as in if someone wants to look him up then 155 B is where you need to go. I think your best bet is to go with the photo and research 175 Brigade RFA.

Also what has helped me immensly is I ordered a copy of my Great Grandfathers Unit War Diary from the National Archives at Kew. This gave me a day to day account of what his unit got up to, so I could trace with a fair degree of accuracy what actions he took part in.

If I can be of any further assistance let me know.

Cheers Aaron.

Hi again,

Checked out the front end of this site and discovered that 175 Brigade was attached to 34th Division in between these dates.

CLXXV Brigade, RFA (joined by April 1915, left 26 January 1917)

There was a Divisional History written for the 34th Division, your local library may have a copy, or someone on this site may be able to offer look ups for you. The combination of the Divisional history and his unit war diary for the 175th Brigade would give you a pretty good picture of your Grandfathers war service.

cheers Aaron.
