Acknown Posted 9 June , 2019 Share Posted 9 June , 2019 I read 'Frank A (or H) May', but I can't find a Canadian officer of that name. The Winnipeg Rifles formed the 8th Battalion CEF, I think. Acknown

Peter Maxfield Posted 7 September , 2019 Share Posted 7 September , 2019 (edited) More info here:- https://www.flickr.com/photos/46212770@N08/26395757668/in/album-72157624930595025/ He states his military experience on his attestation at enlistment (August 8th 1915, at Camp Sewell) as being 7 years in the O.T.C. (The University Officers' Training Corps) in Great Britain and Cyprus, and 6 months in the 90th Winnipeg Rifles (a later mention says May-August 1915). Next of kin lists: Mrs. Ney, Bridge House, Rye, East Sussex, though he was born in Folkestone, Kent. He was first a Lieutenant with the 61st Battalion; then in 'B' Company of the 17th Battalion, before becoming Captain (and Acting Major) with the 1st C.M.R. / 8th Brigade Machine Gun Company. I am in touch with his grandson, Frank DeCourcey Ney, who is often in London. This Frank's father was also a Frank - and famous: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Ney; so we have Frank Alfonso, Frank James and Frank DeCourcey. I do like the colourised IWM portrait. I have stolen it to add to my 1st C.M.R. website and Flickr album, but would like to credit who has done the work, if that is o.k? Flickr here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/46212770@N08/albums/72157624930595025/with/26395757668/ Website here: http://canadianmountedrifles.yolasite.com/ Part of an email from me to his granddaughter, Michele Ney, which included a link to the IWM portrait: "Attached is the original scan held at the Imperial War Museum in London. It's late in the War - most likely 1918, so he would only be 27 here. He looks rather sad, but I expect he must have been rather a lot of fun to have produced your father! I hope the rest of his life was peaceful and joyous. Our grandfathers would have been comrades together with a bond that is probably inconceivable to create in peacetime. What they saw, had to do, and survived is almost beyond comprehension. When Alan's relation was killed - Major Charles Donald Livingstone, it appears that Frank was promoted rapidly. I think, basically, from a Lieutenant to a Major. The reference I've seen has him on that day 'To be a Captain, (Vice Captain; Acting Major)' taking over Command of Charles's Company ["B" Coy.]. That alone demands respect, added to winning the Military Cross for bravery in the field!" https://www.flickr.com/photos/46212770@N08/8316140438/in/album-72157624930595025/ Very best wishes, Pete.
