Jojessholli Posted 9 June , 2019 Share Posted 9 June , 2019 I'm trying to find out about 4046, RAMC - Charles Arthur Cowin - I can see from the information I've been able to find, that he was with the 4th Field Ambulance and went to France on 16-08-1914 where he was wounded and invalided home after being injured at Mons. What I'm trying to find out is when he enlisted - he was with the reserves and therefore called up at the beginning of the war, but I can't find any information of this service. Also, as I've not been able to find any records (as of yet) about his service with the 4th and afterwards (he worked on the medical ships after) so would really appreciate any help anyone can give me regarding when he was injured and his service after. Thanks in advance.
Chris_Baker Posted 9 June , 2019 Share Posted 9 June , 2019 If he was with 4 Field Ambulance he was a lucky man. It was captured almost complete near Landrecies (memory, 25 August?)
Jojessholli Posted 9 June , 2019 Author Share Posted 9 June , 2019 Thanks Chris - do you know where I can get some 'essential' reading on the 4th?
Chris_Baker Posted 9 June , 2019 Share Posted 9 June , 2019 There is a war diary (National Archives WO95 series) but I remember taking photos of it a few years ago. It is a private diary, rather scribbled and possibly written up after the event. Very atmospheric but a bit rough and ready. The incident is bound to be covered in the diaries of the divisional HQ and the ADMS of the division, too.
