Tom Lang Posted 3 June , 2019 Share Posted 3 June , 2019 (edited) He formerly served as 7033, 8th Bn., Highland Light Infantry. A local newspaper clipping (The Hamilton Advertiser, 25th December, 1915) mentions this soldier and intimates that "... he well earned the V.C.". His MIC shows that he entered France on 5th November, 1914, and was awarded the 1914 Star, The Victory Medal, and The British War Medal. It also shows that he was transferred to The Royal Scots. The Medal Rolls confirm this. The London Gazette, 29608 of 3rd June, 1916, page 5587, shows that 7033 Lance Corporal W. Anderson, 8th HLI (attached to 8th Royal Scots) was awarded The Military Medal. The War Diary of the 8th Bn, The Royal Scots, for June, 1916, shows 7033 L/Cpl Anderson J. (wrong initial) being awarded The Military Medal as noted in The London Gazette. The London Gazette, 29758 of 21st September, 1916, page 9206, shows that 7033 Corporal W. Anderson, HLI was awarded a Bar to The Military Medal. The War Diary of the 8th Bn, The Royal Scots, for 22nd August, 1916, shows 7033 Corporal W. Anderson being awarded a Bar to The Military Medal as noted in The London Gazette. I know that there were many submissions made for the award of the V.C. which were later modified to the The Military Medal in the case of Other Ranks. I once was able to see that list at The National Archives. Can someone better qualified than me, find and refer me to the list of submissions for a V.C., but not awarded. This would help clear up the matter mentioned in the local newspaper clipping. Kindest Regards. P.S. From what I have researched, this soldier survived WW1, because I can find no evidence of him recorded in the CWGC or SNWM. P.P.S. This may also be embellishment by a local reporter. Tom Lang Posted 4 June , 2019 Author Share Posted 4 June , 2019 (edited) Further digging shows that the 8th HLI were a TF Battalion, and Companies were attached to other Regiments and Battalions prior to going to France to complete their establishments. The 8th RS War Diary for 1st November, 1914, shows that a Company of the 8th HLI were to be attached, and that Company arrived at Haddington on 2nd November, 1914. The 8th RS arrived at Le Havre on 5th November, 1914. Edited 4 June , 2019 by Tom Lang Add text
