Dear Fellow Great War Forum medal enthusiasts,

I have separate threads concerning an Irishman from Waterville, Co. Kerry, Capt Daniel Vincent McCollum (1886-1967), IARO and latterly Political Agent, Kuwait.

The one deals with his diverse marriages, service at the Basra base and his numerous appointments in the Administration there (despite having been junior in rank), the other with McCollum (also seen as McCallum, a former teacher at Lahore), and his service with the Mesopotamian Civil Administration 1917-18. With thanks to Noel Clark and others.

As far as his medals are concerned, he had the 15 Star Trio and GSM 1918 IRAQ (first sold by Spink in 1952 - years before his death!).

The GSM was with the IARO, although no particulars are known.

He had the IA Card and 1879762136_DetailsofMcCollumsappointments.jpg.acf17dea4c13b3852a60becc6424a5cc.jpg1750830684_1940ARPserviceCaptD.V.McCollum.jpg.f54860b8a6554a7beecb50ba198f1759.jpg805487594_DNWscanof15TrioGSMgroup.jpg.f0fb5f15dc0ed8b7600645d91768e26d.jpg69468030_McCollumMICIARONotraceStarcard.jpg.9afecd455a0f0f85732b7aa9b9e000cf.jpg1501387001_MICErinpurasIdentical.jpg.9ea5ca0ad394158a016b2a1392129bb0.jpg1239457108_McCollumIAcard.jpg.4767d130bce2b5ee552d3aa5ac6c4aee.jpgtwo Medal Index Cards: one to McCallum (sic) with the Erinpuras, confirmed by the Indian Army List, the other McCollum, IARO.

The first has a slanted note: '? Identical'; the second, 'No trace of Star Card'.

The latter confirms his BWM and Victory: Roll IO/105B, Page 458 (do such IA rolls still exist?), and his GSM: Roll 1 of 4, Page 100 (?).

I attach a detailed run-down of his service (from an unknown source), and his medals. The War and ISM may be spurious, as he is shown as being with the A.R.P. in London, 1940; quite apart from the medal group having been a 15 Star Trio, GSM Iraq in 1952...

On second thoughts, the Spink group may have been his original group: in what looks like 8/11/38 he purchased duplicates, which seem to be those I now possess. Indeed, the small, neat, impressed naming suggests a 'later time'. The existance of the War and ISM remains mysterious, considering his Air Raid Precautions service - but perhaps his papers are with MoD: it would be worth the thirty quid to find out!

Another interesting "Times" entry of ca. 30 November 1919, detailing Capt D. V. McCollum's leadership of the Kuwaiti Mission when presented to the King, says in the last line: 'Picture see Page 7.' Could a computer-savvy GWF member unearth this (quite vital for me) 'Picture', please? The Globe and The Times October 1919.pdf

Kindest regards,

Kim.

For what it's worth, he was born Cork No4 District 25th June 1886 as Daniel Vincent McCollum (with an O).

Dear All,

Many thanks for your enthusiastic and prompt replies. Where would we be without the vast reservoir of GWF expertise?

Noel kindly trawled some 15 Star IA rolls and failed to find him.

I have yet to actually inspect the naming (the group will be fully paid-up this month) - but the non-appearance of a1168680892_Spink1952saleofMcCollumgpoffour.jpg.96f19ac85aa0f58d40fc5d5e95aeb0fc.jpg 15 Star on IA Medal Index Cards (notwithstanding the fact that the officers in question had the Star), is not new.

I attach the 1952 Spink listing of his group, which went for Two Guineas...!

Kindest regards,

Kim.

Dear All,

Noel from Melbourne has most kindly discovered "The Times" Court Circular of 31 Oct 1919. This provides details of those who appeared in the Court notice.

Earlier, on 25 October 1919, the "Illustrated London News" of 25 October 1919 had publshed a photo of both the the Ruler of Kuwait's party (left), and that of the Ruler of Najd (right).

All things seem to point to the two non-arabs in the left group to have been the adviser Capt D. V. McCollum, IARO (who had been recalled from leave, and Mrs McCollom).

Sadly, Mrs McCollum was not to survive the following year...537878021_TheTimesCourtCircular31Oct1919.jpg.ab20b4e1c4d7574f308bc5ae85d04501.jpg236319325_IllustratedLondonNews25Oct1919Issue4201page630.jpg.42adc84edca0ae576bb5b434cbc81c13.jpg289104413_18Sep1919marriageatCo_Cork.jpg.f744baf2bc98b24129916358e20ffe44.jpg2137779785_10Dec1920PioneerIndianWklyNews.jpg.93ec97d3ae8d563f0d5916329c354234.jpg

Dear All,

And some more: Captain and Mrs D. V. McCollum shepherding the Arab guests into two cars after visiting Pathe Building to watch themselves on screen!

Mrs McCollum alighted the first car after exchanging brief intimate words with her (newly-wed) husband, the three Sheikhs following, and Captain McCollum taking care of the three remaining Sheiks.

Tragically, the vivacious Eileen McCollum died the following year, in childbirth..._FuH4iLVPpn8DPFz-N4v.jpg.ffe3c5feea3e19a74441d02de5975b2f.jpg7Y9qdk_ZQtqOAYKtZBxA.jpg.bc4e70841f5efff8f37cc7a1b6e757aa.jpg2101444855_CaptandMrsMcCollumandtheCars1.jpg.b09828da1915f24f592c2eb3741ec6e3.jpg704159988_CaptandMrsMcCollumandtheCars2.jpg.242cd5de8761221a8afd9ab8256d12c5.jpg911844476_CaptandMrsMcCollumandtheCars3.jpg.8ad9eb189085003c44c44a01064fb7b2.jpg155548563_CaptandMrsMcCollumandtheCars5.jpg.4aa988f2125cb504127113417871cc82.jpg562481922_CaptandMrsMcCollumandtheCars6.jpg.921ff43c3f3a6bf1ecc48e8a15b70d0b.jpg
