fitz_merc Posted 31 May , 2019 Share Posted 31 May , 2019 I am taking a school group to the Somme area in July and one student has a relative that was killed April 14 1917. He was involved on the attack on the village of Cherisy which still was not captured even by the end of the battle in mid June 1917. The Regimental war diary states that his initial attack led to 361 casualties, seemingly within half an hour. Rifleman John Hudson dies at the start of the Battle of Arras. His service record does not seem to be available so I am struggling to add depth to his story. His service number 392437 was changed from 5963. Can anything be deduced by the number change? The Register of Soldiers effects indicates he was in the same Regiment throughout. Any suggestions welcomed as I like to story tell with the students. Thank you. clk Posted 31 May , 2019 Share Posted 31 May , 2019 (edited) Hi, The 6 digit number is as a result of the general renumbering of the TF in 1917 - see here. Men were generally renumbered sequentially (allowing for drop outs) based on their previous number. Papers survive for some other 9th Battalion men... 5945/392425 Powell - joined up 21.3.1916 ????/392433 Carter - joined up 27.3.1916 5963/392437 5980/392451 Balderow - joined up 2.4.1916 5989/328458 Buckworth - joined up 5.4.1916 As you've got Soldiers' Effects, I guess that you've also got SDGW, medal roll (giving his overseas service dates), census records, etc. Depending on how interested his relatives are, there is a will - £10 from here. It would most likely be just a very few words, and come as a low resolution B&W scan of the original. fitz_merc Posted 31 May , 2019 Author Share Posted 31 May , 2019 Thanks Chris I wasn't aware that there was such a comprehensive renumbering. Thanks for that. I'm not familiar with SDGW. Seems to be a CD? I have Full Ancestry account so I have the census records which tells me he worked for Harvey Nicholls, the men's tailors. Its not coming up with the medal roll but I shall keep trying. Thanks again Mike
