Corporal CL Rogers 1/1 Herefordshire Regiment d. 23 July 1918

I am seeing what I can find on Corporal CL Rogers, 1/1 Herefordshire Regt. No 235767 d. 23.07.18 - and therefore a casualty of Second Marne 1918, whilst the battalion was with the 34th Division - and is now buried in Raperie British Cemetery; the concentration report has details 33 Soissons 179-3 284-2, which does not mean much to me, as it differs from the referencing system that I am used to. His rank and number suggests that he was with his battalion before the move from Egypt to France (they arrived at end June 1918). Any help would be appreciated in bulking out the details; he was a Herefordshire man. I am hoping to call in at Raperie CWGC Cemetery on my drive north at the end of June to get a photograph of the grave for my friend, but it would be great if I could also fit in time to photograph the original burial site, which rather depends on having the correct location. The matter was only mentioned to me when I was already in France, hence I am somewhat stymied.

Extraordinarily enough he had some coinage that was on him returned to the family (and now in my friend's possession) - but since these included a small value coin each from there reigns of George III, William IV and a very young Queen Victoria, along with two 10 centime coins from the reign of Napoleon III, I assume that they did not have much current value.

Any and all help gratefully received.

Just picked up your message. As you mentioned in your post and according to my data base, Cpl Charles Leslie Rogers appears to have served in Egypt prior to the F&F. I will check my lists for further information and get back to you.

These concentration report numbers have been visited before - see here from 2015 -

Pte. Charles Leslie Rogers , Sarnesfield Court, is listed under the Herefordshire Reserve Battalion Recruits, in the Herefordshire Times Roll of Honour published 24th October 1914.

I have just checked Ancestry and in 1911 Charles Leslie Rogers was a Footman, so it is likely that he was a Footman or another category of Servant at Sarnesfield Court in 1914.

Thanks both for your very informative answers. I shall look into this more tomorrow afternoon, when I have five minutes; and then pass what I can cobble together, along with the information that you have provided. I am sure that he/the family will be very pleased indeed.

Anything more that turns up on his service over and above would be gratefully received. For example, I wonder if he went out to Gallipoli, as the battalion did. It seems at least a strong possibility, given that he was in the Battalion's Reserve Recruits by mid October '14; tho' whether he would have gone out with the first overseas deployment is much less likely - maybe as a draft?

It looks from his Medal Card that he didn't serve in Gallipoli.

The Medal and Award Rolls show him kept at the Infantry Base Depot possibly due to his in service experience prior to the War.

Thanks very much re the Gallipoli query; I thought it unlikely once it was clear that he joined up post war's declaration.
