Interested Posted 24 May , 2019 Share Posted 24 May , 2019 Interesting story. Thanks for posting it. Can someone enlighten me; these are individual graves; German Soldiers' graves I've seen in Mainland Europe seem to have two soldiers interred beneath one grave marker. Were there specific rules on this? I believe the French didn't want any of their soil to be permanently occupied by the enemy, even if dead? Does this account for it? seaJane Posted 24 May , 2019 Share Posted 24 May , 2019 I didn't see the German graves, shame on me, but elsewhere in the cemetery there were some places where there were two names per headstone - HMS HAMPSHIRE dead especially.
mbriscoe Posted 25 May , 2019 Share Posted 25 May , 2019 I have photographed all the graves in Lyness RN Cemetery for TWGPP. I think the German ones tend to be the right as you go through the gate. There are a few other nationalities as well, merchant seamen I think (from memory).
