pgarwood Posted 23 May , 2019 Share Posted 23 May , 2019 This chap is interesting. How do I find his service record?? In the 1901 census he is age 11 months, (Born 30th April 1900), living with his grandparents John, age 60, working as a Caretaker and Elizabeth Cramb, age 66. They are resident at 34 St. Andrews Square, Midlothian, Edinburgh. His mother Ann, age 36, working as an Elementary School Teacher, is resident there on census night. In the 1911 census they are living at in a 5 roomed house: 6 Selwyn Road, Harlesden, London, W1. John is age 10 and has a brother Ronald, age 1. His mother Ann has died, and he has a new step-mother, Catherine, age 30, with no listed occupation. His father John, age 43, is working as a Mechanical Engineer. The new marriage took place in 1906 and the new couple have only had one child, Ronald. John Tod Cramb joins the Merchant Navy as an Able-Bodied Seaman. His identity number was 479065. During the war he served in the Mercantile Marine 881607 but appears to have served under an alias as A.B. John Mclean 881607. As John Mclean he was awarded the British War and Victory medals but no Star. These medals were awarded by the Air Ministry. With the outbreak of the Second World War he joined the Royal Air Force as a Warrant Officer. He went on to become 44253 Warrant Officer R.A.F. Then 44253 Pilot Officer on probation August 1940. Then 350031 Pilot Officer - December 1940. Then 44253 Flight Lieutenant (extended service) in the Air Force, June 1947. In November 1947 he become a Squadron Leader (subs).
