Chris_Baker Posted 22 May , 2019 Share Posted 22 May , 2019 After going round in a few circles and then down a few dead-end rabbit holes, etc, I am still none the wiser as to whether the absent voters lists exist for Hungerford and if so where they are kept. I'd be grateful for guidance.
Guest Posted 22 May , 2019 Share Posted 22 May , 2019 1918 registers- shy little varmints. No sign on FMP,BL or Ancestry-but of course, they were the first port of call. There must be a 1918 register. Hungerford Borough Council and West Berkshire Council- an e-mail or call to the modern electoral registration might help- We get used to older registers being with archives or local studies libraries but a fair few are still with the electoral registration people at local councils. Worth a try-even if only for a pointer as to where they might have gone
Admin kenf48 Posted 22 May , 2019 Admin Share Posted 22 May , 2019 (edited) Hungerford, Parliamentary Constituency Newbury Electoral Registers, in association with Berkshire County Archive on Ancestry Hungerford 1919 (Autumn) here NM code but no unit. If you haven’t seen it the preamble is here no mention of AVL. Guess the Record Office should be the first port of call though their online search has nil results for AVL. don’t know if you’ve seen this but Berkshire FHS has this CD which looks interesting https://www.berksfhs.org.uk/cms/Table/Information-about-Berkshire/Berkshire-and-the-First-World-War/ Ken Edited 22 May , 2019 by kenf48
Terry_Reeves Posted 22 May , 2019 Share Posted 22 May , 2019 Not all AVLs were published. My own research into the subject indicates that some constituencies did publish a separate list with unit details, others simply included a column annotated N or V - Naval or Military. I have published this before. TR
