or a leg! and before anyone suggests it, I doubt it had anything to do with chained German machine gunners, but, how about a gizmo for dislodging Turkish female snipers from trees?

 

Looking at it from another direction, other than a flare gun, for what else would an RIR officer - if he is such - need a specialist bit of kit which necessitated him to carry it like a sidearm?   An artillery officer would, perhaps, allow more possibilities.

A detail from the FB image. Could be a rotary adjustment wheel or perhaps a means to attach it to something; akin to a tripod mount.

if you look at post 64, you can see what looks like a trigger on the previous photos if fact is not a trigger
