MaxD Posted 20 May , 2019 Share Posted 20 May , 2019 To go with Andy's post, the HQ 8 Div war diary has a detailed description of the Aubers ridge area with a long series of map features in sections which are given numbers and described. 826 is the Estaminet aux Boers for example. The 25 Brigade diary also has sketch maps which show lines A B and C - didn't have time to look any closer I'm afraid for D Line.. Always worth also looking at the other unti mentioned in a tale over of trenches. Max
MaxD Posted 20 May , 2019 Share Posted 20 May , 2019 The area covered by Andy's 10 000 map is on 36 SW where feature 826 is at N 16 a 0.5 9.0. Later map here (ignore the trench lines) https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by-side/#zoom=15&lat=50.6141&lon=2.8446&layers=101464978&right=BingHyb The East Lancs diary describes the left half of D Lines being at Chapigny which is to the west in M 23 and M 24. stiletto_33853 Posted 20 May , 2019 Share Posted 20 May , 2019 (edited) Of some interest is that 826 is the estimat as described by Max, at 827 was a 4 sided brick farm with pastures & at 828 was a small house of lath and plaster with a thatched roof. There was a German trench there with 826, 827 & 828 all targets for a 6" Howitzer battery for the 9th May attack.
