Admin DavidOwen Posted 17 May , 2019 Admin Share Posted 17 May , 2019 Just now, Gareth Davies said: He was a smallholder and butcher/slaughterman. Butcher might have seen him used for that purpose in the service? You might try this site to see if Paul has anything further on the number? http://armyservicenumbers.blogspot.com/2012/01/north-staffordshire-regiment-5th.html or these folks http://staffordshireregimentmuseum.com/ Due to the paucity of visible info I would lean towards him having served at home for the duration.... unless there are any other clues. Gareth Davies Posted 18 May , 2019 Author Share Posted 18 May , 2019 Dear All It would seem that the identity disc is a slight red herring as now his son has suggested that he may have been South Staffords and so 41853 is looking favourite. clk Posted 18 May , 2019 Share Posted 18 May , 2019 (edited) Hi, If you were to presume that he didn't serve overseas with the North Staffs, it might be worth comparing the likely issue dates of the North Staffs number, against that of the South Staffs number to see if it is at least possible. If he was in an infantry battalion, that would be possible but fairly unlikely. Most butchers in the Army belonged to the ASC. Ron
