The London Gazette entry was published 3 September 1920 and was in recognition of services in India in 1919.  He was then with 3rd Garrison Battalion Bedfords who were in India then Burma.  His name is followed by (Southampton) which is either place of abode or place of birth - would someone please correct/confirm).  Garrison battalions were usually manned by less able men or older men, perhaps he had been transferred from the Hampshires specifically for that purpose.  He had served with 5th Hampshires, also in India.  When his MSM was published his substantive rank was Private but he was Acting Sergeant Major.

The SA medal lists have some G Paul but I don't see a George Frederick Paul.  7860 G Paul in 2nd Hampshires is a possibility, both medals?  No personal info though as yet.
