Remembered Today:

German Leather pouch Identification

Recommended Posts

Hello all

I'm hoping someone has greater luck in identifying the item shown in the photos, i recently obtained this pouch with a collectionn of other military goods (Webley .455 holster and officers drinking flask). I spent a considerable amount of time looking at German leather goods from the great war period and tried to research to manufacturer. I also recently took it to an arms fair and asked a few dealers their thoughts.

So far the conclusions/assumptions are

1) its WW1 military (German)

2) probably cavalry

3) wrong shape for a horse shoe holder

4) possibly some form of an instrument holder

5) unlikely to be an ammunition pouch

If anyone has seen anything like this or indeed if you can solve this riddle your thoughts would be very appreciated

Cheers

Hutch

No idea what it is but think Ronsdorf is the town of manufacture (Wuppertal area).

Could R Honig be the name of the manufacturing company?

it’s an Imperial German folding saw case as used by pioneers etc,

the come in varieties of all leather, leather and canvas and late in the war the ertzas version.

Nice item if you have it

Thanks Dave thats really good to finally have some answers, yes I'm lucky to have it,

Would you know what would have been in the slots on the front?

Any pictures to give me an idea would be fabulous

Kind regards

Hi

It’s similar to the British folding saw and has two wooden removable handles. The smaller section should hold at least one if not two files for sharpening the teeth, screw type awls, and I’ve even seen a small roll of string included.

As an item of equipment it’s definitely over engineered and complicated to make compared to our case.

regards

Hi Hutch

the British saw should fit just fine and will be far cheaper and easier than finding a German one here in the UK. The one you have posted from C&T was I believe part of the collection of  Micheal Baldwin who wrote the Feldzug series of books. A very impression collection and an excellent source.
