Guest Posted 12 May , 2019 Share Posted 12 May , 2019 My father TOMOTH JAMES FRENCH served in the Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment ( regiment no G/28742 ) Pte . during WW1. He was invalided out from France. I would like to find when he served and where in France he was fighting?
charlie962 Posted 12 May , 2019 Share Posted 12 May , 2019 (edited) Welcome Peter, A couple of starter points: The Medal Roll on Ancestry here suggests he was 10th Bn. Lack of a 14/15 Star entitlement suggests he didn't go overseas before 1916. Charlie The Long Long Trail here tells you this about 10th Bn. Date of going overseas was 1916 so perhaps he went with them ? 10th (Service) Battalion (Kent County) Formed at Maidstone on 3 May 1915 by Lord Harris, Vice Lieutenant of Kent, at the request of the Army Council. Attached in July 1915 to 118th Brigade in 39th Division but transferred in October to 123rd Brigade in 41st Division. Moved to Aldershot in January 1916. 4 May 1916 : landed in France. November 1917 : moved with the Division to Italy but returned to France in March 1918. Edited 12 May , 2019 by charlie962

charlie962 Posted 12 May , 2019 Share Posted 12 May , 2019 (edited) Looking at similar service numbers (G prefix was for RWK Service Bns) it suggests he joined c April 1917 and perhaps first went overseas in March 1918, most probably joining the 10th Bn in France when they retuned from Italy that month ? charlie962 Posted 12 May , 2019 Share Posted 12 May , 2019 If you have access to Ancestry then the War Diary for 10th Bn RWK is here, starting on their retun to France from Italy March 1918
