WeWillRememberThem Posted 11 May , 2019 Share Posted 11 May , 2019 (edited) Hi all, I'm interested in finding out more about my great-grandad's movements whilst in the British Army during WW1. His name is George Moss, born 1894 in Oldbury (Worcestershire). Trouble is, I don't think his service records have survived. I have tried to find records for service men with similar regimental numbers to gain some clues but can't find any on Findmypast! This is what I know... 6th Worcestershire Regiment, Service Number 6/8615 1st Worcestershire Regiment, Service Number 8615 Labour Corps, Service Number 311775 Royal Defence Corps, Service Number 81793 (likely to have joined 300th Protection Company) Any help with this will be greatly appreciated. Thank you Edited 11 May , 2019 by WeWillRememberThem

charlie962 Posted 11 May , 2019 Share Posted 11 May , 2019 (edited) George Moss 8615 Wounded per Cas List 15/6/1915 report date 29/5/15 1st Bn Worcs - thus wounding late May 1915 and again: Wounded per Cas List 13/10/1916 Worcs Regt (Bn not given) - thus wounding probably mid Sept 1916 (but see note re WarDiary 2nd Bn below) These two woundings will probably have led to his trf to Labour Corps Charlie Edit: Since his 14Star date is 5/11/14 which is the day the 1st Bn embarked it would seem he went to France with them. He probably remained 1st Bn until Sept 1916 at least ? The issue date of the Labour Corps number will clarify this. (Edit - perhaps Aug 1917) Edit Edit: He is also on a Sick Convoy from France to UK reported in the papers 7/12/14 on FindmyPast Shown as 6th Bn at that stage ! Edit Edit Edit: The Medal Roll gives exact dates for different Bns incl Ist and 2nd. See here on Ancestry 1st Bn 5/11- 1/12/14 (at which point the sick convoy noted above) 1st Bn 6/3/15 - 21/7/16 2nd Bn 22/7/1916- 28/8/1916 (at which point probably his second wounding). Typical War Diary entries (on Ancestry) WarDiary 2nd Bn 23/7/16: "A draft of 28 arrived, chiefly from 1st Bn" War Diary 2nd Bn 24/8/16: casualties in the attack that day "Other Ranks 141 killed wounded and missing" Edited 11 May , 2019 by charlie962
WeWillRememberThem Posted 11 May , 2019 Author Share Posted 11 May , 2019 Thanks all for your help, but I was interested in service records for soldiers who had similar regimental numbers. It would be great if someone could find out what he did after leaving the Worcestershire regiment. I know he served in Ireland at one point.
