Royal Berkshire Regiment/Labour corps

I am researching a John William Allen , born 1890 , His medal card shows he was regimental Number 30012 from the Royal Berkshire regiment , and the 97858 from the Labour Corps . Apparently he had a medical condition thet made him unfit for service . I have checked Findmypast and Ancestry with no luck

Welcome Jennifer.

The John W Allen 30012/97858 Berkshire/Labour is shown on the Medal Roll as John Wilfred Allen.   And this man has a Service Record showing him aged 37 in 1916 !

There is John William Allen 30012 then 673351 Gloucestershire then Labour.

Are you sure you have the correct medal card ?

Hi Jennifer

Welcome to the forum. As Charlie has said the numbers you give are for John Wilfred Allen and there are service papers on FMP for that man. Check them out as they have his Wife and Childs details which will help ID him.

here is the link https://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=GBM/WO363-4/007290008/00580&parentid=GBM/WO363-4/7290008/40/580

There is another John W Allen with the service number 30012 Gloucestershire Regiment, but then Labour Corps 673351

https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/results/r?_fn=&_ln=Allen&_no=30012&_crp=&_ttl=&discoveryCustomSearch=true&_cr1=WO+372&_dt=M&_col=200&_hb=tna

The Gloucestershire Regiment soldier is John William Allen as per Ancestry Medal Roll

Yes the one with no 673351 is right I made a mistake with that number .

why would both of these have the number 30012 ?

I found that record but can’t track down anything else or where he would have served

he was born in 1884 by the way not 1899

Hi Jennifer,

To answer your question - there are same numbers in different regiments..

As there are no surviving service or pension records for John, it's possible to look at close numbers in these records (on Ancestry) to see if there's a pattern for an enlistment date:

30011 Watson Furley attested in December 1915 in Stroud and was posted to the 3rd Battalion Gloucesters in Bristol on 29th June 1916. He then transferred to 14th Battalion in the BEF in January 1917.

30015 Henry Edwards enlisted on 29th June in Bristol, joining the 3rd Battalion before transferring to the 1st Battalion. BEF July 1917.

30020 William Williams enlisted on 29th June 1916 in Bristol, joining the 3rd Battalion before transferring to the 10th Battalion BEF in November 1916.

So this gives a fairly good date for enlistment, but no clue as to when/if he transferred within the regiment or when he transferred to the Labour Corps.

Researching the Labour Corps numbers may come up with an answer there..

That Labour Corps number is a very late 1918 number ?

Think you might be right:

673343 George Kay previously Lancs Fusiliers transferred after illness to Labour Corps on 02.11.18

673369  Patrick Doyle previously Loyal North Lancs transferred after wound & illness to Labour Corps on 07.11.18
