I cannot find my references but for the toffee apple bomb head carrier, it is a wood block (solid piece of soft wood, probably a pine) with a large hole in it. The straps are cotton webbing not leather.

Regards the 18pounder crates. There are several versions in WW1. The most common was a 4 shell crate with a lid on the top head in place by two pieces of wire. The version in the photo, the end comes off and the shells are pulled out. There are lots of photos at Gallipoli of the latter type of crate.

Cheers

Hi Jean-Luc

wooden square approximately 7-8 cm deep by 17cm square, circular hole drilled out to take the base of the head. There was also a slot cut on the underside 5cm wise to take the cloth tape to carry it with.

I’ve given a rough conversion from inches to centimetres

regards

Dave
