Remembered Today:

Which Highland Light Infantry Battalion?

Recommended Posts

I have been trying to research a relative, Archibald Robertson born 1881 in Uist, who supposedly (according to another relative) served with the Highland Light Infantry. According to their memory, Archibald served as a private and was badly wounded at the Somme.

With only this information to go on, I have found an Archibald Robertson:

First name(s)

Arch.

Last name

Robertson

Service number

8947

Rank

Private

Badge number

141946

Enlistment date

07-Sep-1914

Discharge date

08-Jan-1917

Regiment/unit

Highland Light Infantry

Cause of discharge

Wounds Para 392 xvi

Whether served overseas

Yes

Badge date of issue

13-Mar-1917

Record set

Silver War Badge Roll 1914-1920

Category

Military, armed forces & conflict

Subcategory

First World War

Collections from

England, Great Britain

There seem to have been many Archibald Robertsons serving in the HLI alone, however as this one was discharged in early 1917, it seems like a logical guess.

My question is, is it possible to discern which battalion Archibald served in based on his service number? Any help appreciated.

  • Graham Topham changed the title to Which Highland Light Infantry Battalion?

The Medal Rolls (ancestry) indicate that he served in 2(nd Battalion

Just now, RussT said:

This man's medal rolls state 2nd Bn

You beat me to it! He went to France on 26 May 1915 (Medal Rolls - ancestry).

There is a WFA Pension Ledger Card that gives 8947 address as Hillingdon House, Hillingdon Road, Cardonald, Glasgow. Born 1884. Suffered from a fractured skull and flesh wounds of his right thigh.

Do you have anymore biographical  details of your relative? Parents etc

Mark - my relative did say he was sent back home with a steel plate in his head and crutches! so that's another thing that adds up! Born in Uist but moved to Glasgow (not sure when). Father was called Donald we think. Would you be able to send me the WFA Pension Ledger Card? I have access to Findmypast which doesn't seem to have much more than the Silver Badge info. Is it worth subscribing to another site as well?

Edit - it appears soldier 8947 does indeed appear to be my relative as the Cardonald address is correct. So thanks for your help guys!

Perhaps try them out at your local libraries first-usually free access on their terminals or wait for one of their free weekends before subscribing. And there are lots of options when you sign up as to what is available as well.
