seaJane Posted 29 April , 2019 Share Posted 29 April , 2019 Can any kind person advise whether the word (lent) on a Navy List entry - in this case, surgeons aboard REWA - means lent to the ship or lent from the ship? There are two names, and the date against both matches a day when REWA was in port at Alexandria en route from Gallipoli. See attached image from the Navy List. You'd think I'd know someone who'd know, but I don't - not off-Forum, anyway. VMT, sJ
MerchantOldSalt Posted 29 April , 2019 Share Posted 29 April , 2019 (edited) SJ Have come across the use of the word "lent" in the Navy Lists quite frequently. As far as I can tell when personnel are concerned, the word means lent "from" the Royal Navy or RNR "to" whatever establishment it is in question, in your case REWA, often it is qualified by statements such as "Lent to Australian Government for duty". However if it concerns ships then the term seems to mean lent "to" the establishment in question, but that shouldn't worry you here! Ah, but it does slightly, because I am working with an enquirer who has a document stating X medical officers on REWA; and if the two were lent ashore to Alexandria the number is correct - otherwise it's X + 2 ....
