Unusual First Service Number

I am looking at a

Pte 28657 Frank Cheshire, 6 Batt Somerset Light Infantry  who was KIA and missing.

His previous number was S/2sr/04097 and was RASC and I have never seen this before.

i have looked up all his info from SLI number on Ancestry, CWGC, Fondagrave but wondered how I would infact search for his RASC number as which ever way I look I can’t find anything? Although maybe there is nothing.

Did you get that from Soldiers Died ? If not, that also shows

FORMERLY S/2SR/04097, ROYAL ARMY SERVICE CORPS.

There are other examples such as T2SR/01714 Abbott. Something to do with Special Reserve I'd guess by the SR letters.

Special Reserve was effectively a volunteer reserve for the regular army.

The usual prefixes you see are are the likes of S2 and T2 in the ASC so I think the SR was added to mark out the special reservists amongst the men when they took one of the 1 year service contracts there were offered at the start of the war.
