GRAZ Posted 22 April , 2019 Share Posted 22 April , 2019 Hi All I'm researching the service of Henry Darling Renton. Luckily his service records are on Ancestry, he came through the ranks and was commissioned into the Indian Reserve of Officers, joining the Corps of Guides in 1919. I can find nothing about Renton's Indian service. Can anybody tell me how long he served in India for, I don't think it would be very long as he died in Scotland in 1930 Any info would be much appreciated Cheers Graham
MaureenE Posted 22 April , 2019 Share Posted 22 April , 2019 You may be able to find him in the Indian Army Lists, some of which are available online, although if he was commissioned into the Indian Reserve of Officers, perhaps he may not be there, as these were not career officers. See the FIBIS Fibiwiki page Indian Army List online https://wiki.fibis.org/w/Indian_Army_List_online For this period, I do not believe there will be an Indian Army officers service record, for details see the FIBIS Fibiwiki page Indian Army, section Records https://wiki.fibis.org/w/Indian_Army#Records I have seen at least one case for the WW1 period, where the Officer, although serving in the Indian Army, was officially only Attached to the Indian Army. He officially remained in the British Army and his record sources were British Army. Perhaps there may be something in the London Gazette, when he resigned his commission? (Details on the Fibiwiki page) Cheers Maureen
HarryBrook Posted 23 April , 2019 Share Posted 23 April , 2019 Henry Darling RENTON was gazetted 2nd Lt. into the I.A.R.O. on 15 October 1918 https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/31323/page/5521 Promoted to Lt. on 15th October 1919 https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/31755/page/1104 Resigned his commission and retained the rank of Lt. 1st May 1922 https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/32743/page/6389 His name is in the long list in the first column. The heading The King has approved the resignation of the following officers etc. Indian Army Reserve of Officers is on page 6384, and the list of Lts., with the the appropriate heading, begins on page 6385.
