Remembered Today:

Cleaning a British War Medal

Recommended Posts

I recently purchased a British War Medal to replace my great-great-grandfather's that has long since been lost to time. I managed to find one with the recipient's name ground out. However, there is a significant amount of tarnishing on this medal. Is it advisable to clean it? If so, with what?

The medal has already been damaged by erasing the original recipients name. If you want to make it shiny to match your great great grandfathers existing medals, I cannot see it "harming" the medal any more than has already been done from a collector perspective. A few seconds in a silver dip can remove decades of tarnish, though it will make it look like a new replica.
