Morning all.

Yesterday I was very fortunate to be given a medal pair and plaque by a local resident and relating to her late uncle.

This is yet another medal set to be added to my Maldon and Heybridge casualty collection of medals and/or photos:

This is him:

ERNEST JAMES WARD

Private (251230 and 4056) Essex Regiment (Territorials) (1st /5th Battalion)

Lived in Maldon. Youngest son (two of his brothers also served) of the late Mr. George Ward and Mrs. Ward of 106 Wantz Road, Maldon. Enlisted at Chelmsford. [A] [M] [T2]

Died 26/3/1917 (aged 23)

Gaza War Cemetery (X.D.6)

Killed in action.

Can any GWF colleague add any further details please?

Thank you in advance.

Best regards.

Stephen (Maldon).

Thank you corisande, these links are really helpful. What is the Soldiers Effects really telling us about his service please?

Thanks.

Stephen.

Hi Stephen,

From the medal roll it seems that Ernest was renumbered to 251230 from his previous 4056 number. It seems likely that he attested on 22nd November 1915. Papers for other 5th Battalion men show...

4038/251220 Jiggans enlisted 22.11.1915

4042/251223 Norfolk enlisted 22.11.1915

4050/251226 Sore enlisted 22.11.1915

4054/251228 Voyce enlisted 22.11.1915

4055/251229 Wade enlisted 22.11.1915

4056/251230 Ward

4061/251233 Willsher enlisted 22.11.1915

4063/251236 Shuttlewood enlisted 22.11.1915

4066/251237 Polly enlisted 23.11.1915

4072/251239 Creswell enlisted 29.11.1915

4091/251248 Barker enlisted 2.12.1915

Regards

Chris

A couple of interesting things about this man:

CWGC seem to have the wrong address - it was 108 Wantz Road (not 106).

His brother (Oliver) was missing and then it turned out he was a POW.

Regards.

Maldon.

Monies were paid out to his brother Oliver and his mother Elizabeth,

£5 10s war gratuity (net) paid out.

As well as 108 appearing in his brothers service record, it's also shown in his PoW record.

I guess though that it is at least possible that by the time that the war graves information was gathered, the family may have moved next door.
