rolt968 Posted 20 April , 2019 Share Posted 20 April , 2019 (edited) I believe that this man is William Carmichael Mitchell, born in Dundee in 1868. I believe that he was the brother of Pte Charles Chalmers Mitchell, RMLI of HMS Monmouth. William survived the war. He appears with on a local Roll of Honour (which is where I got HMS Ruby). I believe I have found him serving on HMS Fervent as Stoker Petty Officer in the 1911 Census, but cannot find any WW1 records which match him. Has anyone any thoughts? seaJane Posted 20 April , 2019 Share Posted 20 April , 2019 I can't find either of them where they ought to be on the Discovery catalogue at Kew but I am only using my phone, so may not be concentrating! Name + ADM is usually adequate for searches. Does his age match with date of birth in the 1911 census?
seaJane Posted 20 April , 2019 Share Posted 20 April , 2019 (edited) Two William Mitchells born in Dundee, Forfarshire, not stokers, 1883 and 1898. Two in other towns in Forfarshire, 1863 and 1878, also not stokers. scotlandspeople.gov.uk apparently has some records for William Carmichael Mitchell but they need credits to be seen, as far as I can make out. horatio2 Posted 20 April , 2019 Share Posted 20 April , 2019 This could be your man, William (Carmichael) MITCHELL serving as a Stoker PO in HMS RUBY in late 1915. He had been discharged to pension in July 1911. Place of birth just recorded as "Scotland". No service recorded in HMS FERVENT in 1911. His main record is here:-https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D6673008 but his WW1 service has been carried over onto another rating's record here :- https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D6673007 The Charles (Chalmers) MITCHELL, PLY/9196 lost in HMS MONMOUTH was born in LAURENCEKIRK, KINCARDINE. seaJane Posted 20 April , 2019 Share Posted 20 April , 2019 Ah, well done Horatio. It never occurred to me just to try "Scotland"!

Thank you Horatio. That's him. (The birthdate is a year wrong.) I had noticed that there were men on the medal roll in ancestry who did not appear in the service records in FMP. I think all the men with very long service are not there. William Mitchell married in 1902 as L/Stoker while serving on HMS Jackal. Yet another brother served, James Mitchell, also a stoker petty officer served on HMS Minotaur. As far as I know the family had no connection with the sea, although they did live in Dundee for a while. RM
