Marigold1 Posted 18 April , 2019 Share Posted 18 April , 2019 I am currently researching Gunner 32236 Percy Cunningham ,404th Bty, 221st Bde. Royal Field Artillery. Died Basra 27th May 1919, Aged 23. His service record has not survived. He was sent to France on 4th September 1915. (Information on Medal Index Card.) He was seriously ill in hospital in Basra in February 1917. (Local newspaper report. Loughborough.) The 221st Bde, however, did not go to Mesopotamia until 18th-25th October 1817. Is there any way of finding out which unit(s) of the RFA he was likely to have been with before 1917? Any thoughts gratefully received. David Porter Posted 19 April , 2019 Share Posted 19 April , 2019 His date of arrival in France suggests 22nd Divisional Artillery, unless he was part of a reinforcement draft. Medal Index Cards for the RFA can sometimes show the date of embarkation. 98th Brigade RFA disembarked on September 4, 1915, 99th and 101st Brigade RFA disembarked on September 5, 1915. They had moved to Salonika by the end of November 1915. 404th Battery was formed in England in the Summer of 1917 and left Devonport on September 28, 1917. It arrived at Basra on November 20, 1917 but did not join 221st Brigade RFA until early January 1918. As you say, Percy was already in Mesopotamia well before this.
