Henry Gleason was born in the third quarter of 1893 in Newcastle, the son of Henry Gleason (b. 1867) and Jane. The elder Henry was a native of Durham and Jane was from Manchester. The family also included a daughter, Agnes, born in 1889 in Manchester. Henry Senior was one of 6 sons and 3 daughters to Thomas and Isabella Gleason of Durham.

In 1891, Henry Senior lived with his wife Jane and their daughter Agnes at 4, Princess Street, Rusholme, Manchester. He had married Jane Elizabeth Todd in the 2nd quarter of 1888 in Durham. She died in the 4th quarter of 1893.

In 1900, Henry Senior married Rose Emily Barker in West Ham.

In 1901, the family lived at 28, Fulbourne Terrace, Walthamstow, where Henry Senior was working as a Print Compositor.
