KatieJJones Posted 11 April , 2019 Share Posted 11 April , 2019 Hello! I'm searching for my Uncle. Sadly, only his medal card survives which states he (George Robert Hickling) was part of the South Nottinghamshire Hussars with Regimental number 1648 and later the Machine Gun Corps under 164656. I have managed to trace his service almost completely with the Hussars but I can't seem to get very far with MGC. I'm assuming he would have joined MGC late 1917/ Early 1918 but any info from fellow Community Members would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! Admin ss002d6252 Posted 11 April , 2019 Admin Share Posted 11 April , 2019 (edited) I would say 13 June 18 #164616 was compulsorily transferred to the MGC on 13 June 18 and posted to B Battalion MGC. #164124 was compulsorily transferred to the MGC on 13 June 18 and posted to B Battalion MGC. #164698 was compulsorily transferred to the MGC on 13 June 18 and posted to B Battalion MGC. John Beech Posted 23 April , 2019 Share Posted 23 April , 2019 Hi Katie If you look on the main LLT pages you will see that 1st/1st South Notts Hussars actually merged with the Warwickshire Yeomanry in April 1918, becoming B Battalion MGC. They left Alexandria aboard the Leastow Castle on 26th May 1918, but the ship was torpedoed with heavy loss of life to the SNH on 27th May by the submarine UB51 under the command of Kapitanluetnant Ernst Krafft. The SNH lost 49 Officers and men. They later travelled by ship via Taranto leaving on 18th June and arrived in France in late June 1918. Upon arrival, B Battalion became 100th Battalion MGC and, after brief spells with 12th and 47th Divisions, joined 58th Division and moved on to 46th, 25th and finally 66th Divisions. Its possible the men quoted above, were transferred into B Battalion to help towards replacing the losses on the Leastow Castle, as its immediately prior to the Battalion sailing for Taranto. Would need checking. John
