Remembered Today:

Army Service Corps Experts - Regimental Numbers

Paul Johnson

Recommended Posts

Can any ASC Experts give me some guidance please?

Albert George Saggers S/11267 was murdered by the IRA on the 14th May 1921. There is no service record for him online but he is believed to have joined the Bedfordshire Regiment in late 1918.

I am aware that the Prefix "S" is for Specialist but I would like to know if anyone has a list of service numbers for this grade that could tell me if his Regimental Number relates to an enlistment or transfer date.

Thanks

Hej Paul

The  RLC site has your man on their enlistment books.

He attested in Hertford on 21-6-20 with a secondary date 20-3-12 in the age column.

Trade on Enlistment: Butcher

Parish, Town, County: Stanstead, Hertford, Herts.

Father: William, Vicarage Road, Stanstead Abbots, Herts

Died of wounds 14-5-21 with the rank of Private and whilst serving with D Company.

He is noted as having previously served with R.A.S.C. with the Regtl.No. T/453371

And in the Journal June 1921 issue page 125 there is a brief obituary:

SAGGERS.– On the 14th May, 1921, at Dublin, Pte. Albert George Saggers (Butcher), "D" Supply Company, from wounds received when on duty.

There is no further information regarding his previous service.

Ancestry has his Army Register of Soldiers' Effects

Fold3 has his Pension Ledger - no further information as to previous service

Ancestry has a Medal Index Card for Albert Saggers showing service with Essex Regt. and Bedford & Herts Regt.

This could possibly be the same person.

Hope the above information can help you further.

Paul,

The “S” stands for supply and the “T” for horse transport. The supply section included butchers, bakers, clerks, store men, labourers, etc.

All the best,

Gary
