BIFFO Posted 11 April , 2019 Share Posted 11 April , 2019 Sydney William Harris service number 7109 2nd batt welsh regiment, left for France 13th August 14 to leave for France so early he must have been a trained soldier, must have either been a regular/territorial/militia or on reserve, which would have meant he had been in the army prior. The history of the welsh regiment says 2nd battalion at Aldershot on brigade training, when 3rd mobilized most of the brigade were to young for overseas service, 14th August 571 men from the reserve sent to France 13th August . I have looked every where I can think of to try and find him in Militia or welsh regiment, regimental museum haven't been much help Any help with this,I have all of his census details . If he had been a regular then the number dates from 1901/02 6896 joined on 16th July 1901 7156 joined on 13th June 1902http://armyservicenumbers.blogspot.com/p/index.html On a 12yr term he'd be either discharged by August 14 (and rejoined) or he had extended his reserve period. The former would have generated a new service number, the latter would have kept the same number. Craig

Dai Bach y Sowldiwr Posted 12 April , 2019 Share Posted 12 April , 2019 I see from CWGC that he died on 14/4/15. I wonder if the Effects Register would provide any more information?

The gratuity would suggest that as of the outbreak of war he was a regular - whether recalled at that point or still serving can't be determined though. Craig in 1911 England/wales census he is married 27 a shipwright (his uncles trade) 1901 he is 15 to young to sign up so he must have joined joined either as a territorial or in militia 1912-13 as he is a fully trained soldier in 1914,
Admin ss002d6252 Posted 13 April , 2019 Admin Share Posted 13 April , 2019 (edited) Quote 1901 he is 15 to young to sign up He could have joined up as a regular from age 14. In 1901 the standard term is 3 with the colours and 9 on reserve. Add to that a 4 year Section D extension and the time range can fit a recall in 1914 and being at home in 1911. #7100 attested 21 April 1902 on a 3 & 9 term. #7105 attested 28 April 1902 on a 3 & 9 term His war gratuity doesn't match that expected for a territorial* so in my opinion we can rule that out. Craig * territorials didn't have the specific clause that regular enlistments did to get the Service Gratuity + War Gratuity (Territorials got the War Gratuity less the Service Gratuity) Edited 13 April , 2019 by ss002d6252
