sotonmate Posted 10 April , 2019 Share Posted 10 April , 2019 (edited) 1/9 Battalion first landed in Egypt on 25 Sep 1914. Your man would have been in a draft which joined on 9 May 1915 and prior to landing at Sedd-el-Bahr, Gallipoli, on 10 May. You can get a look at the 1/9 War Diary which can be downloaded from Ancestry UK. Reference is WO95/4315. If you google War Diaries Gallipoli you will get a search screen. Membership required or you may be able to get a free trial period or access at a Library etc if you aren't a member. From looking at some early pages it seems essential that you get which Company of the Battalion he served with as they split to various attachments here and there. You may know that he received a Commission in 1918 and served with 5 East Lancashire Regiment in France and Flanders. There is an N Jackson listed on this page in "A" Company as enlisted in July 1914. There may be more on him. https://ashtonpals.webs.com/enlistmentsjuly1914.htm

sotonmate Posted 11 April , 2019 Share Posted 11 April , 2019 gd The 42nd Division seem to have spent most of it's time in the Krithia area, loaning some of it's troops to 29 Division here and there. If you can't access the WD let me know by PM here.
PJS Posted 11 April , 2019 Share Posted 11 April , 2019 I don't have any specific information on Norman Jackson but I can say that he attested between May and early August 1914 based on his service number. As mentioned already, he was on the nominal roll of men listed on the Ashton Territorials page for July 1914 (listed above by Ron). To my knowledge there was only one Norman Jackson in the 1/9th at that time and so the two additional pages on the Ashton Territorials web site must be him: https://ashtonpals.webs.com/1915page12.htm and https://ashtonpals.webs.com/1914page3.htm. Among other things, "A" Company was involved in the Battle of Krithia Vineyard in August 1915 where Lt. Forshaw won the V.C. and others of A Company won D.C.M.s. Background and Nominal Roll of men of the 1/9th landing at Gallipoli: here Transcription of the 1/9th War Diary for Gallipoli: here Peter
