Don't get me wrong, it's wonderful, but I'd love to have been on the committee that decided a nice clock tower is just what we need.

I know what you mean, but perhaps the clock tower was there before the war?

I can't see anything at the moment about the decision or the raising of the money.

 

It cost about £1500 which was a lot at that time, most war memorials seem to be a couple of hundred pounds.

 

I wonder if there was a generous donation from someone though might have expected them to want their name commemorated.

There are 'donated' memorials without names: local to me, the village of West End had huge issues with deciding what to erect, to the extent that the Parish Council committee threw their toys out of the pram and refused to do anything. At that point the proprietor fo the local newspaper (the Southern Daily Echo) paid. A small inscription on the back of the memorial notes this fact, but merely describes him (and his wife) as 'grateful parents' (all three of their sons having returned safely)
