Old Harry Posted 7 April , 2019 Share Posted 7 April , 2019 I read somewhere that during one of the WWI winters (either 1916/17 or 1917/18) the Allied troops suffered from a shortage of food, so that they had to live off the land. Does anyone have any information and/or sources for this? Roy.

sassenach Posted 7 April , 2019 Share Posted 7 April , 2019 I don't know how common or widespread this was but, as an example, Lyn Macdonald's They Called it Passchendaele quotes examples of Tommies helping themselves to vegetables from the fields of Flanders.
