Errol Martyn Posted 7 April , 2019 Share Posted 7 April , 2019 (edited) The attached is from an Airship Officer's AIR76. Would I be correct in interpreting '2Lt Fly Dir S.S. Stn Duties' as meaning 2nd Lieutenant (Flying Officer) Dirigble Submarine Scout (or Sea Scout?*) Station Duties? I note the London Gazette of 11 Oct 18 on page 11977 list a group of 14 personnel as '2nd Lts (Dir.) and another as an Observer Officer 'from K.B.' * One author says Submarine Scout and another Sea Scout. hmsk212 Posted 7 April , 2019 Share Posted 7 April , 2019 (edited) Hi, In the book " Airship Pilot no 28 " by Captain T B Williams AFC he states :- " If you want to know what SS means I regret to say that I don't know. It is said that Lord Fisher, the First Sea Lord, demanded on 28th February 1915 submarine-searching airships, but some others call them submarine-scouts. Official text books seem to dodge the issue by sticking to SS. Make your own choice ". Steve Edited 7 April , 2019 by hmsk212

Errol Martyn Posted 8 April , 2019 Author Share Posted 8 April , 2019 Many thanks Michael and Steve, Submarine Scout(s) seems the most likely candidate. Cheers, Errol
